This waiata recalls the voyage of the "Great Fleet" or the whitu waka that brought Maori to Aotearoa.
Tainui - Waikato tribes /central north island
Te Arawa - Te Arawa tribes / Rotorua
Mataatua - Eastern Bay of plenty tribes (Cook Islands geneologies have "Te Mata Atua - face of the god").
Tokomaru - Taranaki tribes / west coast, north island
Takitimu - East Coast tribes / north island (Cook Islands refer to Takitumu and have it as a district)
Kurahaupo - northern and some western tribes
Aotea - Taranaki / West Coast."
